DEPUTY SHERIFFS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCES DONATION TO CASA OF HUMBOLDT COUNTY

January 14, 2013

EUREKA –Humboldt Deputy Sheriffs Organization (HDSO) announced today a donation of $1,600 to CASA of Humboldt (Court Appointed Special Advocates of Humboldt County).  The money was raised by HDSO members and their families at the annual HDSO Public Safety Heroes Dinner in December.

HDSO President, Patrol Sergeant Ernie Stewart said, “HDSO has a longstanding tradition of supporting CASA because our officers are often the first on the scene to rescue a child suffering from terrible abuse or neglect in their own homes and neighborhoods.  CASA trains mentors who help these children work to put the past behind them so they can have the safe and healthy lives they deserve.”

DEPUTY SHERIFFS ORGANIZATION ANNOUNCES 2012 TONY HILL SCHOLARSHIP AWARD RECIPIENTS
$6,000 in Scholarships Awarded to Local College-Bound Students

EUREKA –Humboldt Deputy Sheriffs Organization (HDSO) announced the names of six local college-bound students who were awarded a total of $6,000 in scholarship gifts as part of the Tony Hill Scholarship Award.

The Tony Hill Scholarship Award is named after a young man, who had wanted to become a Deputy Sheriff with the Humboldt County Sheriffs Department in the 1970’s.  Due to his age, he was only eligible to become a Reserve Deputy and a part-time Dispatcher.  Tony died as a result of a tragic accident before realizing his dream of becoming a full-time Deputy.

Tony Hill loved his job with the Sheriff’s Department, and he loved being a member of the law enforcement family.  In recognition of the many sacrifices that family members of law enforcement officers make when those officers put their lives on the line to protect the community, Tony Hill’s mother donated money to establish a scholarship fund with awards given to family members of law enforcement officers in pursuit of higher education.

“HDSO members happily sacrifice our own personal safety for the safety of our community,” said HDSO President Steve Quenell.  “But our families also share in that sacrifice when their moms and dads are out late at night, are hurt in the line of duty, or suffer from the severe stresses of the job.  It’s such an honor to have the Hill family recognize the law enforcement family’s sacrifice and give this small gift towards bettering our children’s future.”

The 2012 Tony Hill Scholarship Award recipients are as follows:

Maddie Cox, daughter of DA Investigator Wayne Cox, $1,000 Scholarship
